About Training
.
The Challenge
UCSF's research enterprise is primarily funded by external sponsors in the public and non-profit sectors, and in private industry. The administration of such sponsored research is a dynamic and potentially complex activity: each project is unique in its administrative demands and it occurs within a dynamic environment of governmental regulation, varying national health care priorities, and negotiated sponsor terms and conditions.
The Opportunity
Much of research administration is learned by doing it. There is, however, a consistent body of knowledge, which can be mastered and adapted to the unique demands of a given research project and sponsor.
What We Do
The development and training function is a newly re-emerging function within the Office of Sponsored Research. We equip faculty and Research Staff Administrators (RSA) to administer all pre-award sponsored research activities.
We collaborate with subject matter experts across the campus to create, coordinate and deliver learning opportunities and tools to those involved in securing research funding from governmental, non-profit, and industry sponsors.
We take a blended approach to instruction, incorporating:
- self-paced online learning,
- just-in-time on-line tutorials and tools,
- scheduled classroom learning, and
- special programs as available.
Our Current Focus of Activity
As a newly re-emerging function, we are growing our capacity to equip faculty and RSAs to administer pre-award activities.
The current focus of our activities is to develop online and classroom-based learning opportunities, and job aids to assist beginning department/school-based RSAs acquire core job knowledge and abilities to support their on-the-job performance in governmental and non-profit pre-award activities.
Subsequent foci will entail developing:
- beginning instruction in administering industry-based sponsored projects,
- targeted specialized instruction for faculty,
- instruction in specialized and advanced topics.
